Recognize and respond
Look for patterns of control, not stereotypes.
Trafficking rarely looks like the movies. It often looks like a relationship, a job offer, or a favor. These patterns are worth noticing:
Restricted freedom. Someone can't leave a job or home freely, or is always accompanied.
Control of documents or money. Someone else holds their ID, wages, or bank access.
Threats, debt, or deception. Pressure is used to control their work or choices.
Work that isn't what was promised. Conditions are far from the offer, with no way to say no.
The safest thing you can do is ask for guidance. Don't confront anyone or post details online. Call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 and a trained advocate will help you choose a safe next step.
Myth: trafficking always involves kidnapping. Many people are recruited by someone they know or trust: a partner, a relative, or an employer.
Myth: it only happens in other countries. It happens in communities across the United States, including here in Virginia.
Myth: victims always ask for help. Fear, shame, and dependence often keep people silent. That's why informed neighbors matter.
